New for 2022! We are proud to introduce the Ouray Via Ferrata “Upstream” Route!! Beginning at the same entrance as the Downstream route, the addition of the Upstream Route gives Via Ferrata enthusiasts a new and varied route to experience. All within the confines of the remarkable and wild Uncompahgre Gorge.

The Upstream Route is a more challenging route than the classic Downstream Route. In general, users of the route can expect fewer rungs and more natural rock features for progression, all protected by the same cable and VF attachment system. The Upstream Route is rated 4.5B based on the Italian VF Rating System. Overall the route offers more climbing and traversing challenges. Previous experience on Via Ferrata, or other related climbing experience is highly recommended. In addition, we recommend that users utilize “sticky rubber” approach style climbing shoes and fingerless gloves so that you have the ability to grab certain natural rock features on the route while still protecting your hands from inevitable use of the cable for both up and down progessions.

Beginning on May 6, 2023 the Ouray Via Ferrata will no longer allow participants outside of the manufactures weight requirements (90lbs-265lbs/40kg-120kg) to climb the Upstream or the Downstream Route without a professional guide using appropriate belay techniques in conjunction with a VF lanyard. This rule change no longer allows recreational parties to belay participants under 90lbs or over 265lbs. Unguided participants who are outside of the manufactures’ weight requirements will be not be allowed to access the Via Ferrata, and they will be denied entry by the OVF Rangers.

Features of the Upstream Ouray Via Ferrata include:

  • approximately 5000+ linear feet of anchored cable protected / rung enhanced trail
  • one Suspension Bridge Exit at approximately 1/3 the way through the route
  • a three wire cable bridge entrance suspended approximately 100 feet above the bottom of the gorge
  • vertical “Helix Ladder” of approximately 60 feet in length
  • wide variety of steeper vertical and horizontal route sections with interesting and varied movement on natural rock holds designed, implemented, and installed by local climbing professionals and engineers
  • a more “wild” feel as you head further up the canyon towards the final exit of the route
  • final “leap of faith” across the narrowest portion of the gorge, followed by a steep climb to the canyon rim
